Our Hungarian client purchased an ELAN sailboat from a charter company in Croatia.
The vessel was hauled out at a marina on Lake Balaton for complete underwater restoration.
The underwater hull was covered with approximately 1 cm of unknown antifouling coating.
Since both sandblasting and grit blasting were not permitted in this marina, we removed the layers manually using MIRKA orbital sanders and ABRANET sanding mesh.
It took several days until the gelcoat surface was completely clean, resulting in over 100 kg of hardened antifouling waste.
During the sanding process, osmosis damage was discovered in several areas.
We opened and cleaned the affected spots, repaired them using Tikal Fast Patch – a two-component underwater filler, and then sanded the surface smooth again.
The entire hull was then evened out with fine sanding, followed by two coats of Nautix A4 antifouling primer applied within 24 hours.
After a light surface scuffing, we applied two additional layers of antifouling paint within the next 24 hours.
A folding 3-blade propeller was also installed on the Volvo S120 sail drive, further improving performance.
The rigging and sails were tuned by our partner, Bali Performance.
As a result, the sailboat gained 1 – 1.5 knots in cruising speed, delivering smoother and more efficient performance.
